What It Takes to Shoot a Broadcast Commercial…and Make It Look Effortless
When Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum came to us, the brief was clear: broadcast-quality creative that could hold its own anywhere.
What happened on set was a reminder of something we believe deeply at Iceberg; great production doesn’t come from having the most people in the room. It comes from having the right people, and doing the work before anyone shows up on set.
The Crew You Build Changes Everything
There’s a version of this industry where more bodies equals more confidence. More hands, more equipment cases, more titles on a call sheet.
We take a different approach. At Iceberg, we build crews where every person is genuinely multidisciplinary, someone who can hold a light and call a problem before it becomes one, who understands the creative and the technical, who doesn't need to be managed through their own department.
What that creates isn't a smaller crew for the sake of it. It's a tighter, faster, more communicative set. When everyone on set has a high ceiling and a wide range, decisions get made quickly. The client doesn't feel the friction. The talent doesn't wait.
On the Appleton Estate shoot, that agility mattered. A leaner, more intentional team meant we could move when we needed to, adapt when the moment called for it, and stay focused on what we were actually there to make.
Pre-Production is Where the Commercial Really Gets Made
By the time we walked onto set, the commercial was already largely built. That's not an exaggeration. Our pre-production process is designed to anticipate, not just plan. We map contingencies for timing, locations, lighting scenarios, and yes, the last-minute additions that are simply part of working with real clients making real decisions in real time.
On Appleton, that meant scheduling that built in buffer time. When additional end cards were requested close to shoot day, we had room to absorb them without the kind of scramble that costs everyone.
We also believe strongly in bringing talent into the creative process before they step on set. Our team sent storyboards and creative backstory to our on-screen talent, Lana Evanson, ahead of shoot day. Her response was something we hear more often than you'd expect:
“This shoot was so organized. Most productions I’ve worked on don’t have any information for talent until we show up on shoot day. It was helpful receiving storyboards and creative backstory to help us prepare before actually stepping foot on set.”
That's not a small thing. When talent arrives prepared, the performance is different. The energy is different. The day moves differently. And it shows in the footage.
What “Broadcast Quality” Actually Means
There's a tendency to conflate scale with quality, to assume that a larger operation produces a better product. After years in this industry, we'd push back on that.
Broadcast quality is a standard, not a budget threshold. It comes from the caliber of the creative, the precision of the execution, and the depth of experience in the room. It comes from a DP who has shot in conditions like these before. A producer who has navigated this exact kind of brief. A team that communicates well under pressure.
The Appleton Estate spot met that bar because we built it to. Not by throwing resources at the problem, but by being deliberate about every decision that led up to shoot day.
If You’re Planning Something That Can’t Afford to Go Wrong
Some projects have room for improvisation. Broadcast work doesn’t, because it’s the kind that runs on national platforms and represents a brand at scale.
If you're working on something where the standard has to be high and the process has to be airtight, we'd love to talk. Whether you're a brand, an agency, or somewhere in between, Iceberg brings the same level of preparation and craft to every project we take on.
